The FDA has issued Emergency Use Authorization for COVID-19 vaccines to be given to children ages 6 months to 5 years. Vaccines will first be available in providers’ offices by June 21, 2022, and will be in more locations gradually in the coming weeks.
Everyone ages 6 months and older are now eligible to get a COVID-19 vaccine. Getting your child immunized will protect them from getting seriously ill from the COVID-19 disease and protect others around them. Vaccines are safe and effective.
How do COVID-19 vaccines work for kids?
The COVID-19 vaccine works similarly to other vaccines your child may have had. Germs such as SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) invade and multiply inside the body. The vaccine stops this by teaching the immune system to recognize and make antibodies to fight the virus. After being immunized, kids will have strong protection against COVID-19.
For children 6 months to 11, it’s important to note that the doses of each vaccine are smaller than the amount that an adult would receive. Clinical trials found that smaller doses created a strong immune response in kids while helping ensure safety.
What are the benefits of vaccination for children?
Getting your child immunized will help prevent kids from getting severely sick and forming long-term complications. Although young children tend to have milder or asymptomatic cases of COVID-19, they can still catch the virus, get sick, and spread COVID-19 to others. The vaccines will help protect the people around them, including family members, and those at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19.
Is the vaccine safe for my child?
Studies show that COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective for children 6 months and up. The COVID-19 vaccination effort is being monitored more closely than any public health initiative in U.S. history. Clinical trials included thousands of children in these age groups and found authorized vaccines to be remarkably safe and effective.
Like adults, children and teens might have some side effects such as site injection pain, headache, fever, and muscle ache after getting a COVID-19 vaccine. These side effects might affect your child or teen’s ability to do daily activities, but they should go away within a few days.
Will this impact my child's reproductive development?
No, the COVID-19 vaccines don’t affect puberty or a child or teen’s reproductive development in any way. There has been no evidence of vaccines impacting fertility or reproductive health in children or adults. Medical experts are confident the vaccines are safe for growing bodies.
Are there any long-term side effects on children?
Serious side effects that would cause a long-term health problem are extremely unlikely following a COVID-19 vaccine.
In fact, long-term side effects following any vaccine are exceptionally rare. Historically, vaccine monitoring has shown that if side effects are going to happen, they tend to happen within six weeks of a vaccine dose.
For this reason, the Food and Drug Administration has made sure each of the authorized COVID-19 vaccines was studied for at least eight weeks after the final dose. Millions of people have received COVID-19 vaccines, and no long-term side effects have been detected.
Why are children's doses of the vaccine different than adult doses?
For children 6 months to 5 years old, Moderna will offer two shots that will be administered one month apart. Their doses will be 25 micrograms compared to the 100-microgram primary series for adults.
The Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine for children 6 months through 4 years old will include a total of three shots administered over 11 weeks. These doses are 3 micrograms compared to the 30-microgram shots for individuals 12 and older.
Clinical trials found this small amount still produces an immune response for children in this age group.
If my child or teen has a disability, is it still recommended that they get the COVID-19 vaccine?
CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommend all children get immunized against COVID-19 as soon as they are eligible. As COVID-19 continues to spread, children and teens with a disability may be at increased risk for more severe illness and complications from getting COVID-19.
